Routines, Rest Timers and the Workout Planner

How to build and run a workout routine in GYMKA: sets, target reps, rest timers with notifications, exercise notes, sharing routines, and scheduling sessions in the Planner.

The Workouts tab is where a plan becomes a session you can actually follow. It splits three ways: Strength for routines, Cardio for endurance work, and Planner for scheduling.

Building a routine

Under Strength, tap New Routine, give it a name, and add exercises. Each exercise carries its own sets, and each set can have a target rep count and a rest period. Time-based exercises take a target duration instead of reps. Bodyweight movements can be marked as such so no load is expected.

Routines belong to the active body profile, so two people sharing an account keep entirely separate plans.

Running a session

Open a routine in the gym and it becomes a working checklist:

  • Check off each set as you complete it; a progress bar tracks the session.
  • Use the ± buttons to adjust reps or time on the fly when a set does not go to plan.
  • Tap a set's rest chip to start that rest period counting down.
  • Add a note to any exercise — cues, a bar setting, which pin you used — and it stays with the exercise for next time.

The rest timer keeps running when you leave the app or lock the phone, and fires a notification when it finishes. You can put the phone in your pocket between sets instead of watching a countdown.

The three stopwatch tools

  • Timer — a plain countdown for rest or intervals.
  • Stopwatch — counts up, for timed circuits or holds.
  • Rest Game — a small reaction game to kill the dead time between heavy sets.

Making the screen yours

The Edit link on the Strength view opens a customizer. Every element of the routine card can be switched off: the progress bar and set check-off, rest timers, the quick-adjust buttons, target badges and exercise notes. If you find checkboxes distracting mid-set, turn them off — the choice is stored on your account and follows you across devices.

Sharing a routine

Any routine can be shared as a link. The routine is encoded into the URL itself, so whoever opens it sees a preview and can import it into their own profile with one tap. Nothing is published anywhere — the link is the whole transfer.

The Planner

The Planner tab schedules routines onto dates. Pick a routine, choose one or more dates, and optionally set it to repeat weekly. The result is a calendar of what you intend to train, which is the difference between a plan and a hope.

You can export scheduled sessions as a calendar file (.ics) and import it into Apple Calendar, Google Calendar or anything else that reads the format, so your training shows up beside the rest of your week.

Build the routine once, run it for six to eight weeks, and let the Planner handle when. Consistency is mostly a logistics problem.

Put it into practice

GYMKA logs every set, estimates your 1-rep max, and shows your strength tier for each lift automatically. It is free to start.
